Siggi repousse constamment les limites des sciences sociales. Dans ce numéro, la sociologie s'empare des rêves. D'abord, en tentant d'interpréter l'activité psychique nocturne grâce aux travaux pionniers de Bernard Lahire, qui signe l'essai central du numéro. Ensuite, en décortiquant notre imaginaire collectif, de notre rapport aux objets de consommation jusqu'aux fantasmes qui habitent les technosciences. Les rêves nous amènent ainsi aux frontières du réel. D'un côté, les étranges scènes que nous produisons en dormant paraissent bien plus réalistes qu'on l'aurait d'abord cru tandis que, de l'autre côté, plusieurs espoirs de notre époque se révèlent complètement irréalistes, voire dangereux.
Donnant la parole à des traducteur·rice·s de métier, le dossier de ce numéro 284 de la revue Spirale met en évidence le caractère éminemment subjectif et situé du geste de traduire, à un moment où la « neutralité » de celui-ci est plus que jamais remise en question.
Colonial, judiciaire, créatif ou militant : les différents contextes dans lesquels la traduction littéraire se pratique aujourd'hui soulèvent des enjeux contemporains qui dépassent de loin le seul domaine linguistique. S'y croisent des réflexions diverses sur le rôle et les implications (éthiques, politiques et esthétiques) de la traduction selon le contexte, de même que des contributions plus personnelles à propos de la langue, de la littérature et de la poésie. In teaching linear statistical models to first-year graduate students or to final-year undergraduate students there is no way to proceed smoothly without matrices and related concepts of linear algebra; their use is really essential. Our experience is that making some particular matrix tricks very familiar to students can substantially increase their insight into linear statistical models (and also multivariate statistical analysis). In matrix algebra, there are handy, sometimes even very simple "tricks" which simplify and clarify the treatment of a problem-both for the student and for the professor. Of course, the concept of a trick is not uniquely defined-by a trick we simply mean here a useful important handy result.

Taurine (2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) is an enigmatic compound abounding in animal tissues. It is present at relatively high concentrations in all electrically excitable tissues such as the brain, sensory organs, the heart, and in certain endocrine glands. Some of its physiological functions are already established, for example as an essential nutrient during development and as a neuromodulator or osmolyte, but the cellular mechanisms are still mostly a matter of conjecture. Moreover, there are a number of other putative functions of taurine less well known at present. This volume collects nine essays that investigate the work of Gottlob Frege. The contributors address Frege's work in relation to literature and fiction (Dichtung), the humanities (Geisteswissenschaften), and science (Wissenschaft). Overall, the essays consider internal connections between different aspects of Frege's work while acknowledging the importance of its philosophical context. Ce livre présente les résultats d'une recherche en archéologie historique qui a été menée dans le village de Mont-Louis, l'un des premiers établissements permanents euro-canadiens de la Gaspésie. En plus de retracer les grandes lignes de l'histoire de ce lieu, notre attention se porte plus particulièrement sur l'ancien domaine de La Pointe, jadis un très important centre de pêche. Nous remonterons ainsi le temps afin de comprendre ce lieu, ses installations et ses gens, à l'aide des traces que ces prédécesseurs ont laissés dans le sol, de documents d'archives et de récits oraux. Cet ouvrage est un aperçu des richesses patrimoniales et collectives de Mont-Louis de même que de la Gaspésie. La région se compose certes de grands espaces, mais ceux-ci sont intimement liés à une histoire multimillénaire.

Depuis la dernière décennie du XXe siècle, la littérature francophone contemporaine génère des formes d'écritures du Moi fortement travaillées par une esthétique du mélange : référentiel/fictionnel ; discours/récit ; histoire personnelle et familiale/histoire nationale, narration à la première personne/narration à la troisième personne voire à la deuxième personne... Loin de constituer une génération spontanée, ce mélange esthétique remarquable dans les récits de soi traduit un mélange d'identité. En effet, les narrateurs, qui sont généralement des êtres socialisés entre deux cultures, s'appuient sur leur identité plurielle pour proposer - à travers cette esthétique testimoniale du mélange - une utopie du vivre ensemble : l'hybridité. Parce qu'elle renvoie fort opportunément à la démesure et à la folie d'une part - hybris - et, d'autre part, à la bâtardise et à la stérilité - hybrida -, l'hybridité est employée pour subvertir les innombrables certitudes tributaires de la conception moderne de l'identité en tant que catégorie immuable. À cette conception devenue inopérante, l'hybridité oppose la fluidité et la négociation identitaires.
Les débuts du XXe siècle n'ont pas été sans effets majeurs sur la vie des peuples de l'ouest Cameroun. L'exemple de la société Bandjoun au contact des missionnaires occidentaux exprime de manière observable les logiques d'influences idéologique et culturelle. D'ailleurs, en se référant au corps, ses constructions et ses représentations, la littérature anthropologique africaine est riche de descriptions. Elle nous les livre en les théorisant, mettant en valeur toute la complexité de leurs conceptions. Dans une perspective anthropologique, elle relance la pointe du débat Nature/Culture, et met à rude épreuve la définition catégorique du corps par l'occident. Ce qui appauvrit sans aucun doute, le génie culturel des autres peuples, et suscite une invite à une nouvelle façon de représenter le corps. Sur ce, le destin culturel et cultuel des Bandjoun sera incontestablement confronté si l'on s'en tient aux représentations, aux trajectoires religieuses et/ou aux itinéraires spirituels en présence. Et pourtant, l'évidence et la pertinence de cette rencontre culturelle trouvent ses fondements sur les plans sociaux, historiques et ethnologiques. En somme, cet ouvrage révèle la complexité culturelle et cultuelle du corps, et actualise les pratiques et les rituels comme étant le fruit du patrimoine ancestral, et refuse toutes émotions ou sentiments contraires.
