Les contes de ce recueil sont, à deux exceptions près, choisis dans le trésor de la tradition orale française - bien que les mêmes récits se retrouvent, sous une forme ou sous une autre, dans le reste de l'Europe. Le Conte des trois boucs qui montaient à l'alpage est l'adaptation d'un conte norvégien, et le Chat ventru une « randonnée » traduite du danois. Nous aurions aimé fournir, pour chacun des récits de ce recueil, une notice sur le folkloriste qui l'a recueilli et le conteur ou la conteuse qui le lui a fourni, comme nous l'avons fait pour les contes merveilleux dans notre Jean le Teigneux et autres contes populaires français. Cela n'est guère possible. Les collecteurs du siècle dernier ont souvent publié ces petits contes, qu'ils ne tenaient pas toujours en grande estime, sans indication sur leurs conteurs et dans une langue bien éloignée du style oral. Souvent, il m'a fallu réécrire ces récits pour les adapter au goût des enfants. Il n'y a donc pas lieu de parler de collecte folklorique au sens propre du mot. Toutefois, nous avons transcrit à peu près tels quels les contes de « La merlette et le renard », publié par Jean-François Bladé, sans doute avec des retouches, dans ses « Contes populaires de la Gascogne », 1886 ; et « Le demi-poulet », publié par Léon Pineau, probablement avec beaucoup de fidélité, dans ses « Contes populaires du Poitou » en 1891. Au temps jadis, bien avant que les hommes aient appris à domestiquer les rennes, un jeune Lapon était parti à la chasse. Il avait déjà chassé toute la matinée dans la montagne, quand un épais brouillard se leva, l'empêchant de voir à un mètre devant lui. Mais il entendait des cris de berger appelant ses bêtes, et le son de clochettes qui semblait venir d'un nombreux troupeau. Et quand le brouillard se leva, il aperçut une jeune fille belle comme le jour, revêtue d'une tunique bleue, endormie auprès d'une souche. Un troupeau de rennes domestiques paissait dans l'herbe auprès d'elle. Le jeune homme devina que c'était la Fille du Soleil, dont ses parents lui avaient souvent parlé. A l'état de veille, elle est invisible, mais quand elle dort, on peut la voir et la faire prisonnière, avec tout son troupeau. Si l'on s'y prend adroitement, on peut même la transformer en être humain et la garder auprès de soi. Mais il faut l'embrasser avant qu'elle ne se réveille. Elle est d'une beauté surnaturelle, comme d'ailleurs tous les rennes de son troupeau.

This book is the first major work that addresses a core question in biomedical research: the question of acceptable risk. The acceptable level of risks is regulated by the requirement of proportionality in biomedical research law, which state that the risk and burden to the participant must be in proportion to potential benefits to the participant, society or science. This investigation addresses research on healthy volunteers, children, vulnerable subjects, and includes placebo controlled clinical trials. It represents a major contribution towards clarifying the most central, but also the most controversial and complex issue in biomedical research law and bioethics. The EU Clinical Trial Directive, the Council of Europe's Oviedo Convention (and its Additional Protocol), and national regulation in member states are covered. It is a relevant work for lawyers and ethicists, and the practical approach makes a valuable tool for researchers and members of research ethics committees supervising biomedical research.

This book is a study of the forensic theatricality of human rights claims in literary texts about slavery in the sixteenth and the nineteenth century in the Spanish Empire. The book centers on the question: how do literary texts use theatrical, multisensorial strategies to denunciate the violence against enslaved people and make a claim for their rights? The Spanish context is particularly interesting because of its early tradition of human rights thinking in the Salamanca School (especially Bartolomé de Las Casas), developed in relation to slavery and colonialism. Taking its point of departure in forensic aesthetics, the book analyzes five forms of non-narrative theatricality: allegorical, carnivalesque, tragicomic, melodramatic and tragic.

This book offers an innovative approach to migration by exploring Somali youths' tahriib, their `journey into the unknown'. When young Somali men and women refer to the `unknown', they recognize the uncertainty of their journeys. This uncertainty is partly due to the laws and policies that restrict the right to cross national boundaries and define their movements as illegal. Based on fieldwork conducted with Somali youth, mainly from Somaliland, the book details their perceptions of the journey and their practices on the way. The author shows how they position themselves in a constantly changing world before and during the so-called migration crisis that began in 2015. A vital part of tahriib is the constant search for information on possible routes ahead, a search that intensifies as the journey progresses. Specific policy responses, such as biometric registration, influence practices of gathering and sharing information. They have implications for the creation and shattering of hope and the experience of time en route. The book demonstrates that tahriib is ultimately about spending one's time wisely and about creating and maintaining hope in what may seem hopeless situations.

Qui dit conté populaire pense aussitôt aux contes de Perrault. Mais les vrais contes populaires, ceux qui, naguère encore, vivaient dans la tradition orale et qui ont été recueillis de la bouche des paysans, des marins, des artisans, etc., par les folkloristes au dix-neuvième siècle et dans la première moitié du vingtième siècle, sont très nombreux et bien différents de la dizaine de récits adaptés par Perrault pour les dames de la cour de Louis XIV. Ils ont aussi une tout autre saveur que les récits édulcorés des albums pour enfants. Le conte populaire n'est pas seulement une forme de littérature orale. C'est une pratique sociale ; il ne se comprend pleinement que dans une perspective ethnologique. Cet ouvrage cherche à permettre au lecteur de faire connaissance avec les richesses de la tradition orale et avec les recherches menées dans l'étude des contes populaires. La première partie est une introduction à l'étude du conte. Après avoir distingué le conte populaire des genres voisins souvent confondus avec lui, on donne un aperçu rapide des rapports complexes entre tradition orale et littérature ; des modes de collecte des contes ; de la pratique du contage (circonstances du contage, personnalité des conteurs, art de conter) ; des diverses théories concernant l'origine, la diffusion, la structure et le sens des contes. La deuxième partie est une anthologie du conte populaire français de la tradition orale. Elle comprend plusieurs versions des principaux contes types, afin de faciliter les études comparatives.
